I have just returned from a three day stay at Bertram’s. It was a relatively late booking and I went on my own, as the trip was primarily to look at moving to Northumberland. I had no expectations of the place and was a little nervous as I was flying solo. Eating on your own in a restaurant at night can be awkward at the best of times. I had no need to worry. The place was just perfect. I was given a very warm welcome and by the end of my stay the staff were all asking how my house search was going and giving friendly tips and advice on the area. Service was given with a smile, which I welcomed. The food was exceptional and the highlight of my trip. I haven’t eaten this well in years and I’ve eaten at some very upmarket establishments. Portion sizes were generous too. My room was clean and comfortable and it was the little touches which were lovely. Coffee machine, proper milk in a fridge, nice toiletries, that made the difference. Warkworth is a lovely village and I really enjoyed my stay. I didn’t plan to have dinner every night in Bertram’s but ended up there every time because by the end it felt like a big warm hug. Thank you to the staff. I will be back again - maybe soon enough as a local!

All well with the very good scones, jam and clotted cream. Really enjoyed these. We were served quickly and no issues. However, went to order some cake to take away and the girl seemed unsmiling and unfriendly. As the cakes were not labelled we asked what they were. Appeared to be in hurry to get us out of the way. Decided on coffee and walnut cake which looked lovely, but yes, appearances can be deceptive.
Taking the cake out of the boxes at home found that the overly thick layer of topping fell from the cake in one large clump which could be picked up as such. Tried the cake which was very dry and with the thick dried up top was totally inedible. Had to throw it all away. An utter waste of money at £4/ portion. If we had ordered to eat in the cafe it would have gone straight back, but had made a special journey from Embleton and so had to live with it. Not sure how long the cake had been on the counter, but evidently far too long. Not fit to be on sale.
Really must DO BETTER!!!

Clean, smart, tidy daytime cafe with almost all day food. Large portions, be careful you don't over order! Be careful also in that salt is used in cooking maybe a little too much but good taste.

Stopped here for lunch after a walk along the river from Amble. It was so busy and there was not enough staff on. The staff who were there were rushed off their feet but so kind and very apologetic. I really felt for them. Quite a long wait for food and drinks but everything tasted really good. Menu had something for everyone and it was reasonably priced. Would definitely visit again!

Sadly disappointed on our most recent visit here. Service was poor, our order was misplaced, it wasn't busy but the staff all looked fed up and had no real customer-focus. 30 minutes wait for our coffee to arrive and 40 minutes wait for our food to arrive. Having been here a lot in the past, it now feels like the customer should feel lucky to be allowed in and be served, rather than treated to a nice experience. Food was okay in terms of taste, but not cheap. I might go once again and give them one more chance to get it right.

A gem of a place! We stayed here for a night when our hotel lost power thanks to Storm Eowyn and what a find this was! The room was really small, but it had everything we could need. The fresh milk in the fridge was a welcome touch. The shower was incredible - powerful and hot, which was incredibly welcome after a cold shower in the previous hotel! I’m fussy about cleanliness in hotels and b&bs and I can’t fault this place at all. As far as food goes, breakfast was really delicious in the morning. We’ll happily choose to come and stay here next time we’re in Northumberland.

We had a long weekend there, Bertram’s served us really good food - generous breakfasts, great cakes for afternoon tea and lovely rooms and the staff are brilliant, friendly and helpful. Warkworth is such a good location for a short stay with beach not too far away for windy walks, the river and castle are good for a mooch around and there’s the superb Masons pub not far along from Bertram’s.
